Presently, one of the most popular ways to treat oneself after a stressful period is a trip to the spa for massage therapy. Although just now peaking in popularity, the history and development of massage techniques have been around and developing for thousands of years.


The first written evidence on the history and development of massage or touch therapy being used was found in several ancient Chinese books, one being the Nei Ching, or the Yellow Emperor’s Esoteric Classic, which dates back to 2760 B.C. Shortly after the penning of this book on therapeutic touch, the Egyptians developed the technique of

reflexology in around 2500 B.C. This technique preached that by focusing on certain points in the feet, the rest of the body would benefit.

Dating back to some of the first Olympic Games, around 500 B.C., both Greeks and Romans used the benefits of massage on athletes who competed in the games. Many of Rome and Greek’s first physicians and teachers of medicine, like Hippocrates and Galen, incorporated the use of massage into medicine and its practices.

As early as 100 A.D., schools specializing in teaching the techniques of massage being to sprout up in China. On the island of Japan, massage was also being used and experimented with. Around 600 A.D., Shiatsu massage was born. Shiatsu uses focused pressure applied by the fingertips in areas known in acupuncture to unblock and increase the flow of energy in the body, restoring balance and harmony. Advances continued to be made in the Asian continent, and during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), a technique is known as tuina, or pediatric massage, was developed and refined. A form of this technique can still be found in modern massage therapy.

With the exploration of the Orient, many of these techniques made their way back to Europe. Many athletes began experiencing the benefits that massage therapy had to offer. In the middle of the nineteenth century, a man by the name of Johann Mezger introduced the idea of massage therapy to the scientific community. The terms effleurage, petrissage, and tapotement became popularized among the scientific and medical community as a result.

In 1894, the Society of Trained Masseuses was created in Britain. This group offered medically recognized massage training to those seeking it. The great psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud, even used massage therapy as a way to treat the effects of hysteria during this time.

The turn of the twentieth century brought an explosion of different techniques being developed across the globe. In 1937,

aromatherapy was discovered, accidentally, by Rene Maurice Gattefosse. During this time, associations of massage therapists began to spring up as well. Coupling the growing popularity of massage, many regulatory boards also began forming in the mid-1900s to ensure the safe practices of massage.

Over the thousands of years massage therapy has been around, very few of the core techniques have wavered over time. The years have introduced many different massage techniques, some that have lasted, and others that have fell off. Those that remain in practice today are a testament to the true healing powers found in massage. With that, it might just be time to start planning that next spa day.

Many people don’t really know where Belize the Naturist’s Paradise is located in the world. It is a small Central American country bordered by Mexico to the North, Guatemala to the West and Honduras to the South. While many towns are practically surrounded by rivers and seas, Belize is not an island.
However, it is a popular destination for the many cruise ships that tour around the Caribbean, but don’t come here expecting American or European style luxury.
Belize’s crown jewel is the lush tropical backdrop that can be found in nearly every town and every district. One American ex-pat I met says, “it’s a naturist’s paradise.”

Take a walk on any trail, and you are bound to greeted by dozens of brightly colored parrots, chirping their hellos; butterflies like the Blue Morpho, which will land on you if you stay still enough; or howler monkeys if you are in certain areas like Burrell Boom and Lamanai. They aren’t unfriendly, but they are loud.


This latest trip had me in the town of San Ignacio on Belizean Independence Day. We drove from Corozal in the north to this town just west of the capital city of Belmopan. The ride was filled with parades of marching children showing off their patriotism, bike races which draw competitors from all over the world like the Tour de France and scenery unmatched by anything in the world.

Don’t get me wrong, you will pass shacks that make you wonder how anyone can survive living there, as well as tired and hot people waiting for buses to take them where they need to go, and vendors selling carvings and fruit on the highway. But, if you look beyond them, you will see hibiscus flowers growing wild, birds of paradise and ginger lining the street and the most gorgeous palm trees bearing the sweetest coconut you will ever taste.

The leisurely drive had stops at local supermarkets for cassava chips by the Cayo Snack Company, a trip to Cheers on the Western Highway for a potty break in a super clean bathroom and a yummy carrot pineapple muffin with some Cokes and a Fanta.

We also tried to get to the popular, yet seemingly elusive Jaguar Paw resort, but we happened upon a government park with cave and river tubing. That’s an adventure for another day.

We checked into a hotel in San Ignacio called the Hi-Et Guesthouse. By American and European standards it is a dump! But I have learned, clean is the best barometer in this country. The rooms are small, but they have private baths with hot and cold water. You go through the owner’s home to get to the rooms, passing their living room, laundry lines and kitchen. But hey, the shower is good enough to wash my hair and get the day’s sweat, sunscreen and bug repellant off me. The bed isn’t the plushest, but it’s clean and the owners are nice. Best of all, it is $40 Belize (about $20USD) for a double bed room. We could have gone up the street and spent $100USD but for what? A TV maybe? Big deal. And, let me tell you something, the power goes out in Belize a lot… and those big fancy hotels usually don’t have generators and the rooms aren’t always better. Some notable exceptions, The Great House in Belize City, Tony’s Inn and Resort in Corozal, DuPlooy’s in Cayo and Five Sisters in Mountain Pine Ridge.

One trip we stayed at a “resort” in Hopkins that looked kind of yucky outside, but the rooms were serviceable and they were on a beach, so we got to swim until dusk came.


Although I have to admit, the clumsy girl in me was a little afraid by the lack of railings. But I survived!

The roads in Belize can be a little rough, especially when going off the main highways and up through the mountains. But it is totally worth it to see miracles of nature, like the 1,000 foot fall, which is really more like 1,600 feet high.


You can find that at Mountain Pine Ridge in the Cayo District in the West.

Want to get a little more up close and personal? How about a trip to the Community Baboon Sanctuary in the village of Bermudian Landing, a 30-mile drive northwest of Belize City, to see the Black Howler Monkeys. If you’re lucky, you’ll have them eating cashew fruit out of your hand, like I did!

There is so much to see and do in this country, it could take you a lifetime!

The other night I was sitting here thinking back about my current relationship. I was thinking about how much I love my girlfriend. I thought about how close we are, how she knows my secrets and I know hers. I thought about how great our sex life is, but how our relationship is still much more than sex alone. Maybe at the beginning of a relationship we feel a need to secure things into place. Making sure she knows that you love her by holding the door open for her, buying her dinner, and then giving her a little present. And then you both end up feeling securely in place, as if by romantic hot glue, and you don’t try so hard. You both know you love each other without the need for all these little favors.

You don’t need the little things to tell you that you’re loved, but it helps. If you’ve been together for 2 weeks or 20 years, you should still try to keep a few little things alive in your relationship. Special occasion? Take her out for dinner. Did she have a hard day at work? Maybe a back rub and some candles would be nice. Not her birthday but you just want to let her know that you still love her? By all means, buy her a present!

Give Yourself a Back, Shoulder, and Neck Massage

To loosen up tight aching muscles in the back, neck, and shoulders, place two or three tennis balls in a long tube sock. Holding the top of the sock, swing it over the back of one shoulder, and hold onto the toe of the sock with the other hand. Lean against a wall, and roll the tennis balls over sore aching muscles. This is one of the best ways to give yourself a massage when two extra hands aren’t around. Follow up with a favorite topical analgesic to take away remaining muscle aches and pain.

Give Yourself a Hand Massage

If the joints of your fingers ache from arthritis, you can give your hands a massage that will help alleviate the pain while making your skin exceptionally soft. Warm about ¼ cup of baby oil in glass or metal container in a pan of hot water. While the baby oil is warm, pour it into the palm of one hand along with a tablespoon of granulated white sugar. Give Yourself a Foot Massage

When feet are aching and sore after a long day of standing in uncomfortable shoes, give yourself a relaxing foot massage. All you need is a plastic dishpan, enough marbles to cover ¾ of the bottom of the pan, the hottest water you can stand, peppermint essential oil, Dr. Scholl’s Peppermint Foot Lotion or another foot lotion of your choice, a soft absorbent towel, and a comfortable chair.

Pour the marbles into the pan, and fill it with enough with water to completely cover your feet. Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil, and while sitting in a comfortable chair, give yourself a foot massage by rolling the soles of sore aching feet over the marbles. You won’t believe how good they feel!

When the water cools, pat your feet dry, and rub in Dr. Scholl’s Peppermint Foot Lotion or another preferred foot rub. After giving yourself this soothing foot massage you’ll feel relaxed, and your feet will feel better than ever.

The fasting rising form of massage in the United States is currently the practice known as Rolfing. Through this form of soft tissue management and manipulation, people are said to experience great relief from muscular tension, full body and mind wellness, and is being promoted as one of the most effective types of pain management.


Rolfing was developed in the 1950’s by Ida P. Rolf, PhD in biochemistry, and was first known as Structural Integration. In 1971, Rolf founded the The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration. The theory behind Rolfing is that as the body matures, the connecting tissues, or fascia, bind the independent muscles of the body and limit their movement. While the practice has been called painful in its first sessions, clients have said that the immediate pain is overshadowed by the long-term benefits.

A typical Rolfing treatment is in 10 weekly, 1 hour sessions. Each session works on unlocking a specific set of muscles beginning with those near the breathing centers and continuing on until a full-body unlock has been achieved. Rolfing practitioners unlock the muscles through deep massage using their hands, elbows, knuckles, and fingers to stretch and separate the fascia binding the muscles. By aligning the muscles in the body, patients are said to achieve great improvements in their breathing, nervous systems, digestion, and even in their emotional well-being.

Many treatments for chronic pain in the body is performed by bone specialists and chiropractors. These methods align the bones on the body, especially the spine, to reduce the tension on the muscles, but treatments must begin anew because the bad structure of the muscles soon pushes the bones back out of alignment again. Rolfing works to put the muscles into their place and thus bring the bones into alignment through the pulling and structure of the muscles themselves.

Although no medical studies have proved the effectiveness of Rolfing in pain management, clients swear by the relief the treatment provides. Scientific studies are now underway testing the success in clinical experiments. In testimonials, sufferers of chronic pain have found themselves to be completely free of their symptoms even before the end of the 10-week sessions.

Rolfing sessions usually consist of a 20 minute consultation and then the 60 minute sessions of bodywork. Fees per session range between $75 and $160.
