Presently, one of the most popular ways to treat oneself after a stressful period is a trip to the spa for massage therapy. Although just now peaking in popularity, the history and development of massage techniques have been around and developing for thousands of years.


The first written evidence on the history and development of massage or touch therapy being used was found in several ancient Chinese books, one being the Nei Ching, or the Yellow Emperor’s Esoteric Classic, which dates back to 2760 B.C. Shortly after the penning of this book on therapeutic touch, the Egyptians developed the technique of

reflexology in around 2500 B.C. This technique preached that by focusing on certain points in the feet, the rest of the body would benefit.

Dating back to some of the first Olympic Games, around 500 B.C., both Greeks and Romans used the benefits of massage on athletes who competed in the games. Many of Rome and Greek’s first physicians and teachers of medicine, like Hippocrates and Galen, incorporated the use of massage into medicine and its practices.

As early as 100 A.D., schools specializing in teaching the techniques of massage being to sprout up in China. On the island of Japan, massage was also being used and experimented with. Around 600 A.D., Shiatsu massage was born. Shiatsu uses focused pressure applied by the fingertips in areas known in acupuncture to unblock and increase the flow of energy in the body, restoring balance and harmony. Advances continued to be made in the Asian continent, and during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), a technique is known as tuina, or pediatric massage, was developed and refined. A form of this technique can still be found in modern massage therapy.

With the exploration of the Orient, many of these techniques made their way back to Europe. Many athletes began experiencing the benefits that massage therapy had to offer. In the middle of the nineteenth century, a man by the name of Johann Mezger introduced the idea of massage therapy to the scientific community. The terms effleurage, petrissage, and tapotement became popularized among the scientific and medical community as a result.

In 1894, the Society of Trained Masseuses was created in Britain. This group offered medically recognized massage training to those seeking it. The great psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud, even used massage therapy as a way to treat the effects of hysteria during this time.

The turn of the twentieth century brought an explosion of different techniques being developed across the globe. In 1937,

aromatherapy was discovered, accidentally, by Rene Maurice Gattefosse. During this time, associations of massage therapists began to spring up as well. Coupling the growing popularity of massage, many regulatory boards also began forming in the mid-1900s to ensure the safe practices of massage.

Over the thousands of years massage therapy has been around, very few of the core techniques have wavered over time. The years have introduced many different massage techniques, some that have lasted, and others that have fell off. Those that remain in practice today are a testament to the true healing powers found in massage. With that, it might just be time to start planning that next spa day.

Eat Without Starving

Instead of worrying about what not to eat and how to lose weight to bring down your blood pressure, start adding food to your diet. Not any old food, but good food. Eat one fruit with every meal and have fruit for a 10 a.m. snack. That is 4 servings of fruit each day. Then add one green, yellow or red vegetable to lunch and dinner, with a light lettuce salad. You can munch on crunchy orange carrots, cool green cucumbers, sweet yellow bell peppers, and crispy lettuce while your dinner is cooking or while watching television from the couch. No cooking is required on most fruits and vegetables. Sore back? No money to purchase expensive massagers or vibrating chairs? Well, while you save up to get yourself the real deal make a temporary massager using mere thread spools. When the spools are empty you can use them to make a manual back massager that helps you relieve bothersome back pain.
Use a piece of cord to decide how many spools you’ll need. The cord you choose must be strong enough to hold the spools yet narrow enough to allow two pieces of cord to go through the hole of each spool. Cord that doesn’t unravel easily is ideal. Instead of cord you can also use narrow ribbon, yarn or small roping.

Stretch your arms out past your sides, pulling a piece of cord out to that length, but don’t cut the cord just yet. Lay the length of cord onto a table and use it to align spools in a horizontal row. Add as many spools as you need to have them equal the amount of cord on the table.

Still not having cut the cord, begin threading it in and out of the spools. Start by going through the top of the first spool then up through the bottom of the second. Thread down into the third spool, then up through the fourth. Continue this pattern until you’ve threaded all the spools. It’s not necessary to butt the spools together; you can leave spaces between the spools so they’ll spin easier. Cut the cord leaving several inches hanging off of each end.

Pull out another length of cord and thread the spools once again. This time, you’ll start at the opposite end and go in the top where you previously went in the bottom of the spools. Spools that were previously threaded from the bottom will now be threaded through the top. When finished, cut the cord, once again leaving several inches hanging from each end.

You now have two cord pieces hanging from each end. Tie each set together with double knots. If you want you can add a drop of glue to the final knot to secure it. As you tie the knots, leave an opening between the end spool and the knots, to create a handle.

There are many ways to decorate or change the look of the spool massager. Paint the spools and add designs with paint markers. Or, wrap a sticker around each spool and leave the ends plain. You can also glue on fake jewels, sequin, and other craft supplies. The amount of embellishing you do is up to you. Just make sure you leave the edges of the ends of the spools as-is. The top and bottom spool edges are the part of the spool that actually connects with the skin, and you don’t want any embellishments – other than paint – on these areas.

Hold the handles of the back massager and move it from side to side across the back area. The spools rub and massage the back muscles giving you some relief from back pain. The manual back massager will help loosen tight muscles, too. Make smaller versions, using mini spools, to massage legs and other areas of the body.

It’s not mandatory that the spools you use be wooden. Nowadays, many threads are spun onto plastic versions of the spool. The plastic ones are fine for this craft but make sure there are no rough edges before using. Many manufacturers cut a slit into one end of the spool to hold the end of the thread. This slit can scratch or otherwise irritate. If there are any rough places on the plastic spools just use a piece of sandpaper to smooth the spool edges.

Back pain is a horrible thing but new products to treat back pain are very expensive. This simple spool massager may not be the latest in technological breakthroughs but it will serve the purpose while you save for something better.

Melting away tension is important, but you can also work up a sweat in the gym and relax too. Its all a matter of mind and getting in touch with your body. I use the gym as a way to feel more alive. It is a reward in itself. If I couldn’t work out, I would go insane.

While there is no doubt in my mind benefits of massage would be good for healing and beneficial, you can also give yourself a massage using your hands to work the joints and muscles on your arms, legs and back. My grandmother is alive and kicking at 95 and has been doing this for years. She also does stretches and calisthenics in bed.

We have to promise to ourselves to be kind to ourselves and do what is right for our bodies. This includes not eating too much, especially of junk foods that don’t nourish you. And to speak kindly to ourselves so that we are more loving and respond to better treatment by doing our best.

Health is about balance. You can be too thin, too fat, to tense, too soft and flabby. Don’t let your ego tell you that you have to be better than everyone. Just be yourself. And it doesn’t have to be a fight that way. You can just be fit and be you and be strong and honor God.

Massage can be a step towards a healthier body and out look, it can help you be more peaceful and kind. But you can certainly do the same thing at home without spending a fortune and get health benefits of someone else massaging you.

Before you start you should wash your feet in warm soapy water and dry them. Put the foot you are massaging on a clean towel to keep the oil off of things you don’t want the oil to get on.

Pour about a teaspoon of the oil into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together briefly. Start at the toes and massage all the area of the toes, top, bottom and in between the toes. Breath the scent of the oil deeply into your lungs and relax as you massage.

After the toes are massaged you can go downward on the foot until you have the whole foot oiled nicely down to the heel. Concentrate on areas of the foot that have dry skin.

Once you have finished massaging the entire foot put the clean sock on and start doing the other foot.

This can be very relaxing and a good time to do it is just before going to bed. It may even help you relax and get a good night sleep.
