For the past five years, I went from one dead end job to the next, searching aimlessly for opportunities to grow with the perfect organization. After years of searching and disappointment, I had reached a dead end. I realized the corporate world was not for me. I realized that I didn’t care to grow or advance in any way with the corporate world. I didn’t aspire to be a receptionist or administrative assistant for the rest of my life. Additionally, I wasn’t investing time and money in school to remain at the bottom of the totem pole, confined in a small office cubicle and doing monotonous office work.

I was born to do more. I was born to utilize my multiple gifts. And one of these gifts was to make good use of my hands.

I’ve always been a leader, and less of a follower. Taking orders from others never came easy for me. Despite the setbacks I’ve encountered throughout my life, the Universe makes no mistakes and I value every experience, for each one has taught me something valuable and led me one step closer to the door I recently opened.

After completing my Associate’s Degree at a community college and transferring to American University , I found it difficult to schedule my classes in accordance with my work schedule. With today’s competitive job market and hopeless economy, I decided to branch out and develop a skill in my “jack-of-all-trades” box: Massage therapy.

Going into massage therapy was one of the smartest decisions I made.

Not only am I pursuing something on the side that I love, but a flexible work schedule helps make it possible to work and make a decent salary while completing my degree program at AU. In addition to flexible hours, the salary far exceeds what I will ever make working in corporate America.

During these times of economic “crisis,” America is stressed and the demand for massage therapists is high. Finding a job after completing your massage therapy certification is easy. It’s an automatic five to ten job offers after passing the National Exam, which gives you the advantage of practicing anywhere in The United States.

Most massage therapy programs last anywhere from six months to a year. If you’re willing to invest a short amount of time, the long term payout is worth it all.

It changes you. Many students begin to slowly move away from using the left side of the brain and align with the right. The left side of the brain governs logic and mental sharpness, while the right side rules creativity, imagination and intuition. You move from “technical” to learning the art of using your intuition. You must be receptive and responsive to your client’s body. Logic can’t help you there. Only intuition can. Being receptive to the needs of your client and opening up your “sixth sense.” Your intuition will naturally take over from there.
